The new Massivemag.com is brought to you by the volunteer efforts of a dedicated band of old school Massive Posse, determined to make available the old archives and present new content.  Your Massivemag.com catalog orders help pay for the substantial costs of developing, maintaining, and improving the website (booze and ephedrine really). However, if you've had your fill of Massive goodies, we also accept donations towards the cause.  The bigger the better.  After all these years, some of our crack-smoking readers must've finally got off the pipe and struck it big in the derivatives market or was smart enough to invest in lottery tickets.  Send some of that money over this way. Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy nostalgia.  Last, we're no better than those scumbags we send to Washington:  Money talks.  If you have an idea for what you'd like to see on Massivemag.com, include it as a note with your donation!

Trance Label Profiles (Unpublished) (Issue 22) PDF Print E-mail
Matt Massive | Monday, 01 February 2010 23:47
Trance started as fringe movement inside the rave community and has now evolved into a full-blown subculture. Its fluro sounds can be found throughout the globe and are now on the rise in the US. Some of the labels responsible for giving us these wonderful sounds can be found in our own backyard. And many have set up offices in the US from abroad. Take time to welcome them with outstretched arms and open ears.

Blue Room Records UK & USA

Blue Room was founded in London around 1992 due to the lack of proper representation and support for the artists.  Since then it has given us some of the biggest names in trance and beyond. They have also been responsible for their own line of loudspeakers, which are both aesthetically stunning and a harmonious fusion of form and function. Blue Room has also demonstrated that it is not just another trance label but a multimedia entity that refuses to limit its creative bandwidth to just one genre. Producing techno, trance,

breakbeat, drum and bass, ambient, and names like Juno Reactor, Koxbox, X-Dream, Montauk P, and so much more. In August of 1998, Blue Room landed in San Francisco in hopes of better representation in America. Since then they have been very well-received and continue to remind us that trance is a state of mind and not just a formula. To sum up the entire Blue Room experience is as simple as "supercalifragilistic."

Flying Rhino Records

Label Profile

In August 1994 Flying Rhino Records was formed as a collaboration between Zoom Records and three young DJs and producers, with the sole purpose of taking the music of globally popular underground parties and making it readily available to all. After a year with Zoom Flying Rhino became an independent label. To date it has released 11 EP's from its small, yet internationally known, list of artists. Flying rhino has intentionally kept its roster small to allow itself to develop these artists to their full potential and to allow the natural progression of the label's distinct sound. Sounds that can bee heard throughout the world, conceived by the likes of Technossomy, Green Nuns of the Revolution, Slinky Wizard, Sheyba, and The Syb Unity Nettwerk Experience. In the spreading of these wonderful sounds, the Rhino has landed on the shores of California with grand plans for 1999 and beyond. From the US office alone we can expect to see six albums in 1999 alone. Flying Rhino has been committed to embracing the future with its ever-evolving sounds but has remained true to its past.

Starchild Records, Inc.

Label profile

You never know what might be lurking in your own back yard, as the case may be with Starchild Recordings. Starchild Recordings was officially incorporated on January 3 of 1997. Since then they have become one of the fastest-growing trance labels around. In 1998 they were rated as the best US trance label and the best new label worldwide by Beatservice. Their first release, "TRIPOUT: PyschoTropic Creations"

quickly gained sellout status and is currently out of print, making this label one to keep a close eye on. AC spoke with label founder and outgoing CEO, Jason Wolfson.

How and why it all started:

I have always been into music. I could probably write a whole essay on what it means to me, but for the sake of your readers… let's just say I love the stuff.   I went to a performing arts high school and always planned on studying music. One thing lead to another and I found myself studying computer science at the University of London. It was in London where I was exposed to electronic dance music and it just blew me away.  All the "techno" stuff I had heard in the past pretty much disgusted me… But London exposed me to some really incredible stuff.  During this time I discovered on the Internet the underground tracking scene.  Essentially, there are tons of talented musicians writing music on the Internet using software packages called trackers, and they are distributing them via downloading the files for free!  I thought it would be a great idea to bring some of this tracked music to a different media.   After moving back to the United

States, I started Starchild on this concept. Although we are not a label that exclusively releases this "tracked" music, we do work with several trackers and will always be involved in  the tracking scene.

Primary goal of the label:

My personal goals are to basically have fun... I can come up with a nifty philosophical mission statement if you would like (you can get that from our web page, though), but at the end of the day we want to have fun and be happy.  We would also like to provide young talented artists another medium to get their music out to the world. There is a lot of great talent out there, but large, corporate labels are not willing to take a risk on new acts.  We provide our artists a laid-back approach to label management and it has proven to be successful.

Sound or genre that best describes the label.

Starchild will always be innovating sounds, and we hate to stereotype music, but most of the media has called our style to be heavily influenced by the sound being called goa trance or psychedelic trance.  It is primarily a sound being developed in Europe and is currently hitting hard in the US (mostly in San Francisco and New York). Personally, I like all types of electronic dance music, but psy-trance gives our mind something to play with as it is the most complex form of electronic art, I think.

Describe the label in one word.

Potential.
